Among all the prophets and messengers sent by Almighty Allah throughout history, none holds a station as magnificent and comprehensive as that of the Final Prophet, the Prophet of Mercy, and the Intercessor of the entire Ummah — Sayyiduna Muhammad Mustafa ﷺ. His noble life, from the very day of his blessed birth to his return to his Creator, stands as the most complete model of human excellence ever witnessed on earth. This article presents a thorough, sequential biography drawing upon the most authentic sources of Islamic tradition.
Section 1
Noble Name & Lineage
The most blessed and honoured name of the Prophet of Mercy ﷺ is Muhammad. In the earlier divine scriptures, he is referred to as Ahmad. The Quran, the Hadith literature, and the books of Seerah collectively mention hundreds of his descriptive names and titles, among the most prominent being: Muzzammil, Muddaththir, Ra'uf, Rahim, Mustafa, Mujtaba, and Murtada — each reflecting a unique dimension of his sublime character. His kunya (paternal title) is Abu al-Qasim.
He ﷺ belonged to the noble tribe of Quraysh, specifically to the distinguished clan of Banu Hashim. His father's blessed name was Abdullah, and his mother's blessed name was Aminah.
Paternal Lineage
Muhammad ibn Abdullah ibn Abd al-Muttalib ibn Hashim ibn Abd Manaf ibn Qusayy ibn Kilab ibn Murrah
Maternal Lineage
Muhammad ibn Aminah bint Wahb ibn Abd Manaf ibn Zuhrah ibn Kilab ibn Murrah
Both lineages converge at Kilab ibn Murrah.
Section 2
The Blessed Birth
The Prophet of Mercy ﷺ was born on 12th Rabi al-Awwal, a Monday, corresponding to the 20th of April, 571 CE. This blessed occasion is celebrated by Muslims across the world as Milad al-Sharif — a day of immense joy, gratitude, and spiritual remembrance.
Section 3
Upbringing & Early Childhood
Even before his auspicious birth, his beloved father Abdullah had passed away. By the time he ﷺ reached approximately five years of age, his beloved mother Aminah also departed from this world. Following this profound loss, the responsibility of his upbringing was lovingly assumed by his grandfather, Sayyiduna Abd al-Muttalib (رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ). Two years later, his grandfather too passed away, and the noble duty of raising the young Muhammad ﷺ then fell upon his uncle, Abu Talib.
Section 4
The Fortune of Halimah Sa'diyyah
It was an established tradition among the nobles of Arabia to send their newborn children to the desert villages and tribes for nursing. The purpose was twofold: to allow children to grow up in clean, open air — strengthening their physical constitution — and to enable them to acquire pure and eloquent Arabic speech from its original tribal sources.
In keeping with this noble custom, the blessed mother Aminah entrusted the infant Muhammad ﷺ to Sayyidatuna Halimah Sa'diyyah (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا), sending him to her tribe for nursing. During this period, an abundance of divine blessings and miraculous bounties manifested through the blessed infant, transforming the fortunes of Halimah's household in remarkable and well-documented ways.
Section 5
The Blessed Childhood
The early childhood of the Prophet ﷺ was itself a testimony to his extraordinary station. His blessed cradle would sway through the intervention of angels. The moon would move in response to the motion of his blessed finger. Unlike the habit of ordinary infants, he ﷺ never soiled his garments involuntarily; rather, he would attend to his natural needs only at a particular, consistent time.
When he reached a young age and watched other children playing outside, he himself never participated in their games. When boys would invite him to join them, he would gracefully respond: "I was not created for play."
Section 6
Youth, Character & Trade
The youth of the Prophet of Mercy ﷺ was a living embodiment of every noble human virtue: truthfulness, trustworthiness, loyalty, fidelity to promises, compassion, generosity, sincere friendship, care for relatives, and a deeply felt concern for the poor and the destitute. His noble person remained completely free from every moral failing — greed, deceit, falsehood, intoxication, indecency, theft, vulgarity, and every other form of ignoble conduct had no place in his blessed life.
His reputation for integrity and trustworthiness spread far and wide throughout Arabia, earning him the most beloved of titles: Al-Sadiq (the Truthful) and Al-Amin (the Trustworthy).
Trade was the hereditary profession of his noble family. At the age of thirteen, he ﷺ undertook his first commercial journey to the land of Syria (Sham), accompanying his uncle Abu Talib. Later, at the age of twenty-three, he travelled to Syria again on a trade mission, carrying the merchandise of Sayyidatuna Khadijah (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا), accompanied by her servant Maysarah.
Section 7
Marriage & The Pure Consorts (Azwaj-e-Mutahharāt)
Almighty Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ the exclusive distinction of contracting more than four marriages — a privilege specific to his prophetic station alone. His first blessed marriage was solemnised at the age of twenty-five with Sayyidatuna Khadijah al-Kubra (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا), and as long as she remained alive, he did not enter into any other marriage.

Worship, Spiritual Retreat & The First Revelation
At the age of forty, the Prophet ﷺ would withdraw to the Cave of Hira, situated approximately three miles from the sacred city of Makkah al-Mukarramah, devoting himself entirely to the worship of Almighty Allah. It was within this very cave that the first divine revelation descended upon him — the opening verses of Surah Al-Alaq — marking the beginning of his prophetic mission and a new era in human history.
Section 11
Declaration of Prophethood & The Call to Islam
At the age of forty, he ﷺ formally declared his prophethood. For the first three years, the call to Islam was conveyed quietly and discreetly. Among women, the first to embrace Islam was his beloved wife Sayyidatuna Khadijah al-Kubra (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا). Among men, the first to accept the faith was Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ). Among children, the first to enter the fold of Islam was Sayyiduna Ali al-Murtada, the Lion of Allah (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ).
The following noble companions also embraced Islam thereafter (رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہم): Sayyiduna Uthman ibn Affan al-Ghani · Sayyiduna Zubayr ibn al-Awwam · Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf · Sayyiduna Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas · Sayyiduna Talhah ibn Ubaydullah.
After three years, in obedience to the divine command, the Prophet ﷺ formally extended the invitation of Islam to the Quraysh — who refused, reacted with anger, and began hurling insults against him. In the fourth year after prophethood, he ﷺ began proclaiming Islam openly and condemning polytheism publicly, prompting the disbelievers to unite in fierce persecution.
The acceptance of Islam by Sayyiduna Hamzah and Sayyiduna Umar (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہما) brought tremendous strength to the Muslim community. Despite this, the Quraysh imposed a complete social and economic boycott upon Banu Hashim, confining them to the valley of Shi'b Abi Talib for three years. In the thirteenth year after prophethood, 72 individuals from Madinah embraced Islam, and gradually the light of Islam spread from household to household throughout Madinah and Quba.
Sections 12 – 17
The Hijrah & The Madinan Period — Year by Year
In the thirteenth year after prophethood, the Master of Madinah ﷺ granted permission to the Muslims to migrate to Madinah al-Munawwarah, undertaking the journey himself in the blessed company of Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ). After the Hijrah, the Prophet ﷺ graced Madinah with his blessed presence for eleven years.
Year 11 — The Passing of the Prophet ﷺ
On 12th Rabi al-Awwal, a Monday, corresponding to the 12th of June, 632 CE, at the noble age of 63 years, the Prophet of Mercy ﷺ departed from this worldly life. His sacred body was laid to eternal rest in the chamber of Sayyidatuna Aisha al-Siddiqah (رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا) in Madinah al-Munawwarah — which today forms the most sacred part of Masjid al-Nabawi.
